On change in the country (blog entry for Theology)
November 27, 2008I recently came across this documentary about this Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, Jesse Robredo. According to the documentary, Jesse Robredo ran for the mayor position for Naga City, when Naga City was suffering from poverty. However with dedication and hard work, he was able to turn Naga City into one of the most promising provinces of the Philippines. He has created many job opportunities for the people and he has made the city more prosperous. This documentary made me remember Davao. I went to Davao earlier this year. One incident that struck me was when I was about to leave the car of my friend. I was taking out my laptop with me. My friend told me to just leave my laptop there. I was apprehensive. But my friend told me that the crime rates were so low because the mayor was so strict. Apparently when their mayor first sat in his position, the crime rates were very high. So the mayor imposed very strict rules and ruled with a tight fist. He would make sure that all criminals were all placed in jail or were severely punished. He was reasonable to deal with as long as you were following the law. This made the people afraid of him yet they admired the way he ruled the town. This mayor along with jesse Robredo, made me think about the situation of our country. It made me start thinking about the corruption.
Would the day come when we would have some change in the country? Can poverty actually be lessened?
I was thought about our president and felt a twinge of pity for her. No doubt, she is definitely corrupted. She has definitely amassed a big sum of the country’s money. But on the flipside, she must have been doing something right which is why the Philippines is not suffering as much. Yes we are suffering. Yes many people are getting poorer by the minute. But prior to this economic crisis, our economy has been moving quite steadily as compared to other countries. So she must have done something right at the very least. But this does not change the fact that she did squander amounts of money. Because of the many wrong things she has done, people have overlooked some right things she has done. And for this, I pity her. Because in the eyes of people, she will never be able to redeem herself anymore.
Trust is extremely important. In any relationship, be it with your significant other or your friend, it is important that trust be present. It is so easy to break someone’s trust but it would take a lifetime to patch back the broken pieces. In the same way, the mayors of Davao and Naga have won the trust of the people which make them very successful in what they do. In order to alleviate the Philippines from poverty, we do not only need a leader who has the brains to be able to think of ways to pull us from this black hole we are in. But we also need someone we can trust. Someone who will work for us and not against us.
Now that the Presidential elections are fast approaching, who do you think can actually lead the Philippines? Who can be the “Obama” the Philippines needs at the moment? Because a successful country needs good governance.

Posted by tahn at November 29, 2008, 12:35 amI remain hopeful that things in this country will get better. Surely we need better leaders but time and again we’ve been let down by the people we put in power. There are notable exceptions of course but not nearly enough.
This is why I believe that change will be better achieved from a more grassroots level. The country’s problems are not wholly dependent on who the president is although that might have a big impact. The thing is, people like you and me can make things better in our communities. We’ve been given certain advantages. What we need to do is find a way to make those advantages not just work for us, but to create opportunities for those who aren’t as lucky as we are.
Posted by Peter "The Mordo" Juan at November 29, 2008, 12:52 amLol, i think the only way to improve the country is to kill everybody above 10 yrs old and to start anew.
Posted by alex at November 29, 2008, 12:58 amour government has turned out to be a system of distrust and deceit. frankly, i don’t know who to trust or even who to put in my ballot in 2010. thoughts of villar and mar roxas and chiz escudero linger through my head but damn, with the general impression of the politico-legal situation in this nation, i don’t even know if i should trust these picks of mine.
but even though with that i still blindly believe that this nation can rise up. one thing that i learned from the de la salle brothers is that individually, we should “be the change that we want to see”, and i believe that because nothing will happen if we don’t start (according to adam mordo) at the grassroots.
Posted by jayvee at November 29, 2008, 1:03 am“Because a successful country needs good governance. ”
My history prof said earlier that only a small percentage of the youth voted last elections. Indeed, in our class, only 3 out of probably 20+ who can vote did.
I encourage those who can vote to do so because it is the only way to elect in to position those who we think can lead us.
Posted by Yel at November 29, 2008, 1:05 amThe country is getting “better” because the whole world is getting “better”, and our improving economy is just an indicator of that. It’s not happening because of what GMA is doing “right.”
Wait till the economic downturn happening in the USA makes its impact felt locally and you’ll see that no amount of arm waving and fake smiling by GMA will do anything to prevent its effects. In fact, the country could be in such a better position right now if investors weren’t so scared of dealing with a government almost universally accepted as one of the most corrupt.
What would be good for the country? It would take a person who has the welfare of the people (starting with the poor) in mind, and without any of the underlying motives inherent in “trapos” to use them for political gain. Maybe Tony Meloto?
In our case, it’s not the political savvy, or the brains (tho that’s important), or even the credentials, that we need in a leader. Just the pure motives, the honesty, and the will to make change happen. A president can’t be everything or know everything, but setting a the right example will be the most powerful message and mobilizing factor for the people to work for the good of the country.
Posted by thegreatest at November 29, 2008, 1:19 amI had hope for this country at first. Just the idea that we’ve hit rock bottom and there’s nowhere to go but up.
Yet we seem to hit new lows over time. So now it’s not so much hope as it is fear in what it would take to ultimately make our fortunes change.
God forbid it’d take a Watchmen type solution. (Apologies for the geek reference but that graphic novel seems relevant now more than ever.)
Posted by marco at November 29, 2008, 1:36 am@Peter, I agree. We really need to do something as individuals and as citizens. We cannot solely blame the government for every bad thing happening. Despite the great power they do have over this country, they cannot change everything. We have to start things in our own way and reach out to people.
Posted by tahn at November 29, 2008, 1:50 am@alex, I did come across some writer who had the similar sentiment. It was about how killing everyone below 10 would ensure a pure country as you can start training them from scratch.
Posted by tahn at November 29, 2008, 1:51 am@jayvee, similar to you, I still do believe that there will be change. I just hope that this change will actually come about during my lifetime.
I do believe that we need to start doing something on our own and in our little ways. But it’s easier said than done. Many people feel that it is useless to actually start on something because in the end, it does not result into anything. Sadly many people have turned a blind eye to the plight of our country.
Posted by tahn at November 29, 2008, 1:55 amDisclaimer: random thoughts, i dont necessarily subscribe to all of this.
personally i think is impossible to completely erase corruption from our government. its deeply entrenched in our system, id even consider it a norm. i think the best person to lead the country would be one who is willing to not be TOO greedy. You have to admit if all the wealth of a nation is placed in your hands you cant help but want to take some of it for yourself. And anyone who claims otherwise is a hypocrite. if thats the case, go ahead, just make sure you give more to the country. if i were to illustrate it in numbers it would be about a 20/80 division. take 20% of the money but be sure to use the other 80% for nation building. Its an “everyone happy situation,” you get some money and the country gets better. Im pretty sure the mayors of naga and Davao, however progressive they may seem have taken a bit for themselves. Lets just look at it as a bonus in the presidents salary hehe or a faster way to recover ones investment. Coz if your gonna run for head of state your going to have to spend tons of money, and whoever wins the election race suffers a substantial loss in his/her personal finances.
another necessary quality would be an unwavering desire to effect change. no matter how much the people will hate him or how bad a certain move will affect his political career, he shouldn’t care. I call this the “f*** you all, Im president and i think this is the right thing to do” attitude hehe. coz personally i think its pointless to theorize and discuss protractedly what to do. sure, his actions have to be based on something but he shouldn’t be wasting his time in finding the perfect solution to everything. just do what seems like the best thing at that particular moment, and lets see what happens. Just coz someone becomes head of the state doesnt mean he/she stops being human. he/she can still make mistakes. at least something gets done, i hate it when politicians just debate. its a complete waste of tax money, id rather have them waste our money trying things out and failing than spend it on their food and air-conditioning while they are debating on what to do.
thats all for now…
Posted by malds at November 29, 2008, 1:55 am@Yel, it is very important that we can vote. The problem is many educated people do not vote because they feel that their votes would amount to nothing. A lot of uneducated people would vote based on the treatment or the freebies they receive from the person running for office. When the person gets elected into that position, the treatment would not be as good anymore.
Posted by tahn at November 29, 2008, 1:58 am@thegreatest, We certainly do need a leader who is willing to look after the country and not just him or herself.
Our economy has made a turn for the better because the world is somehow making a turn for the better. But prior to the crisis, the economy of the Phils has been rather stable. Is that not an indication that GMA has done something right in this aspect? or not?
Posted by tahn at November 29, 2008, 2:03 am@marco, and I still continue to hope… I shudder thinking about the kind of government my children would face if we do not take turn for the better
Posted by tahn at November 29, 2008, 2:04 am@malds, I do hold similar sentiments as you do. anyone in office would definitely take something for themselves. They would feel that they are entitled to because of the service they give. But I do hope and pray for someone who is not too greedy and will be willing to actually do something towards change.
Posted by tahn at November 29, 2008, 2:07 amtahn, precisely. most people who can vote for the sake of voting, not the freebies, think that their vote won’t make any difference. However if they would all think like that and choose not to vote, then they have no right to complain about the country’s situation.
Posted by Yel at November 29, 2008, 2:12 am@Yel exactly. We all have to be responsible citizens and vote for the candidate we deem best for this country. It is not enough that we pay our taxes. But we need to play an active role in pushing our country to something better.
Posted by tahn at November 29, 2008, 2:15 ammany people have turned blind to the plight of this country because they are not seeing the supposed role-models of change as is. the role-models of change that they see are from movie and television.
that’s not particularly bad but i prefer role-models of change who have a clue about running a nation.
Posted by jayvee at November 29, 2008, 2:54 am@jayvee they definitely need to know something about running a nation. the will and determination to create some positive change is also important.
Posted by tahn at November 29, 2008, 2:56 amtahn, i am not going to spare you my criticism.
First, I think you have a very backward, very amateur and very UNINFORMED view of the world, molded perhaps by your family, what you watch on television and what your friends tell you (or even perhaps, heavens forbid, the Church). You have absolutely no sense of critical faculty, and to speak of the nation in such a manner proves that we ARE going nowhere.
Your discourse of the nation, so to speak, is no different from what lawmakers and senators think. Which disturbs me quite a bit, because we are no longer children, but still we cling to these illusions regarding nation-building.
I apologize if I sound insulting, but nowadays, to be truly kind, one has to be mercilessly critical, of friends, strangers, or even with fellow academics.
Your view of the nation NO LONGER APPLIES TODAY. Where have you been hiding all these years? To substantiate this point, I suggest you read something, a short article by a known political scientist/anthropologist/sociologist from France, Pierre Bourdieu:
http://www.analitica.com/bitblioteca/bourdieu/neoliberalism.asp
I do hope you read that short article. If you read it, ask yourself: did I understand a word that that man has spoken? If not, then you would get my point. You, so to speak, have been hoodwinked all your life to believe that we CAN do something about the nation the same way that we can bake a crate of bread or open a hundred bottles of Pepsi.
Truth be told, the only solution to the current world system is another world system, pushed forth by any kind of national liberation. But unfortunately, judging from what I have read here, you are not even aware of what these national liberation movements are. In fact, I don’t think you are aware of anything aside from what you read, what you see in front of you (superficiality is useless) or what you hear. Believe me, teach-in classes are no more than academic chismis legitimized by bureaucrats who enjoy the school setting.
THERE IS NO HOPE if people don’t begin to think critically. The nation will flounder into the hands of more capitalists wishing to such the lifeblood of our own country. And slowly, people with skill and talent are leaving for greener pastures, to wipe the asses of foreigners who don’t give a shit about Filipinos.
It is time we realize that what Marcos did should not be supported anymore. We are actually supporting a kind of cultural nationalism that benefits not the people, but the national bourgeoisies.
Posted by marxista at December 3, 2008, 1:58 am@marxista,
I am aware that a national liberation system would be ideal and good. But in our country at this point, this is rather difficult to achieve.
I do agree that people do need to think critically. This is the reason why education is very essential. Because education is a tool that aids in critical thinking.
I do not have an UNINFORMED view of the world. I am definitely aware of what is happening in this world. Like you, I am educated and literate. Hence I make it a point to find out about the happenings around the world. I do, however, have idealistic views about our nation. This does not mean that I am not aware of what is happening in our country. It does not mean that I am not informed. But rather it means that some part of me still hopes that someday there will be change and that change can start from each and every individual. Hope in the possibility of change does not make an individual uninformed or backward. It does not make you view things through rose-colored glasses. It does not mean that you are fooling yourself. But it helps you to be open to the possibility that there are people out there who can actually do something. And I think that it is important that we remain open to that possibility.
